Round 7
Royal Adelaide 1 lost to The Grange 4
Sunday 25th June at Kooyonga Golf Club
Report courtesy of Jane Flentje
The final round of the Junior Division 2 pennant season was played on a cold, windy Sunday afternoon at Kooyonga Golf Club against The Grange.
Our eligibility to play semi finals depended not only on this match but also how other matches played out.
Lucas Huang playing number 5 was down early but steadied to play some great holes, he was 2 down after 11 and playing straight off the tees, but his match ended on 14, 6 down with 4 to play.
Alston was off next and played a very steady game right to the finish, he was all square after 5, 1 down after 8 but square again after 11. He went into 17 1 down and unfortunately lost his ball and conceded the hole going down 2/1.
Liam played next and was up and down all game, square after 5 holes, 3 down after 8 but back to 1 down after 11. He chipped in over a bunker from 40 ft to win 14 and go 1 up, going into 18 he was still 1 up, squaring 18 gave him the game. Well done Liam.
Jisung playing number 2 was off next and matched his opponent well, he was never more than 1 up or down all game. He was 1 up through most of the the back 9, hitting some spectacularly long drives. Going into 18 they were all square but unfortunately Jisung pulled his shot into the green off to the left into long rough giving his opponent the hole and game.
Angus playing number 1 made a terrific start he was 3 up after 5, hitting straight of the the tees and putting well. He had a great contest with his opponent who was also playing steady golf. They were all square after 11. Angus went into 17 2 down, losing that hole to finish 3/1.
The overall result was 4–1 down, but also disappointingly we finished the season in 5th place meaning the team has not qualified for finals.
I’m proud of the relatively inexperienced team for the way they have played this season, their enjoyment of the game, the improvement they have shown and the support they have given to each other as a team. They will be back stronger next season.
Thanks so much to the terrific parents out each week supporting their young ones on their golfing journey.
Round 6
Royal Adelaide 0 lost to The Vines 5
Sunday 18th June at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club
Report courtesy of Jane Flentje
Round 6 of the Junior Division 2 pennant season was played against The Vines at Tea Tree Gully Golf Course on a cold, windy afternoon.
It was a tough day for all our players against an inform team from The Vines, eventually going down 5-0. We began with one player down, the reserve having already been called on earlier in the day to replace an ill team member and another player having to do a race across town having thought the match was being played at The Vines.
Lucas Huang was first off and although he played a great long game he was outplayed around the greens from the start and went down 9/8.
Liam Hutchison was next up and had a great start, with terrific long game, he was 1 up after 5. A few slightly wayward drives and some unfortunate ball lies upset his rhythm and he was 2 down after 9. Liam had to give his opponent 8 shots and he missed a few putts. He eventually went down 5/4.
Jisung Park had a tight tussle with his opponent, right to the finish, he had to give her 11 and she was playing a terrific game. He was never up but kept fighting, he was 2 down after 3 and still 2 down after 9. Jisung hit some spectacular drives but his opponent was playing a really tight short game. He was 4 down after 14 then won 15 and 16 going into 17 2 down, but he halved 17 to finish down 2/1.
Angus Norcock started very steadily, he was all square after 6. His opponent was in great form and after 11 he was 2 down. Despite playing some very good golf he was down 4 after 13. He squared 14 and 15 to finish down 4/3.
A disappointing overall result but a credit to our young players who kept positive and fighting to the finish.
Thanks again to the parent caddies who come out each week to support their young ones.

Round 5
Royal Adelaide 2.5 halved with Kooyonga 2.5
Sunday 4th June at Royal Adelaide Golf Club
Report courtesy of Di Faull
Round 5 of the Junior Division 2 Pennant was played at Royal Adelaide Golf Club against Kooyonga. Representing Royal Adelaide were Angus Norcock, Jisung Park, Sam Garrick, Liam Hutchison, Alston Ma and Lucas Huang as reserve.
Our top two players Angus and Jisung had very tough matches with both having to give 9 shots, it is quite a daunting prospect to have to give your opponent a shot on every alternate hole however they both played their best.
Angus went down first and was 4 down after 9 holes, finally losing 6/4.
Jisung started really well and was up until the 6th, he lost 7, 8 and 9 so was 1 down at the turn. He battled on and kept himself in the match finally losing on the 17th 2/1.
Alston, who had been first off, started well and only lost one hole on the front 9, he squared 4 and won 4 so was 3 up after 9 holes. Cheered on by our reserve Lucas, he squared 10, won 11 and 12 but lost 13 so was 4 up with 5 to play. A win on 14 saw the match end 5/4, so one match to RAGC.
Liam was on fire on the front nine, he was 1 over par after 7 holes, had 42 off the stick after 9 holes and was 4 up. He won 10 and 11 so was 6 up with 6 to play but his opponent wasn’t going away and some frustrating near missed putts and wayward shots saw the match go to the 17th where the win gave him the match 2/1.
Now it was down to Sam’s match, he had not been up in his match at all and was 2 down after 9 holes then 3 down after 12. Things were not looking good but he turned the match around squaring 13 and 14, winning 15, 16 and 17 to be all square going up 18. Text book shots saw him in a position to win the hole but it was not to be, result match squared.
Final team result RAGC 2.5 to Kooyonga 2.5, a great result. Royal Adelaide currently are top of the table half a point in front of The Vines who we play in our next match.
Thanks as always to parents and caddies for coming every week.

Round 4
Royal Adelaide 3 defeated Country Districts 2
Sunday 28th May at Willunga Golf Club
Report courtesy of Di Faull
Round 4 of Junior Division 2 Pennant was held in wet and cold weather at Willunga Golf Course on Sunday 28th May. Representing Royal Adelaide were Joshua Antell, Mitch Zander, Jisung Park, Sam Garrick and Liam Hutchison against a strong Country District team.
Joshua playing number 1 was in the last match off the 10th tee. After a correction of his handicap he had to give his opponent 6 shots but the match was never in doubt, 6 up after 9 holes he quickly and quietly won the next 3 holes for an 8/7 win.
Jisung had a tough match considering he has dropped his GA from 30.7 to 15.6 in 4 weeks! He had to give his opponent 10 shots and was not able to get in front during his match going down 4/3.
Sam had a bad day at the office against a very strong opponent and went down 5/4.
This left 2 matches still to be finished, with Country District holding 2 wins to our 1.
Liam was square after 9 holes, got to 2 up, but after finding the water on the penultimate hole found himself 1 up with 1 to play. This match could have gone either way but his opponent put his approach to the green into a penalty area and dropped a shot. Liam, in his usual quiet and calm way, took advantage of this and won the hole for a 2 up victory.
The teams were now tied with 2 wins each and 1 match still to be concluded.
Mitch had been battling to keep himself in the match, and he was 1 down after 9 holes and just couldn’t get in front. Coming to the second to last hole he pulled off a great win and they were all square going up the last! His opponent also found himself in the penalty area near the green, and after some tense moments on the green the match went to Mitch 1 up!
Standing at the last hole we were all holding our breath as we watched Mitch, and it was a great win to give us a 3 – 2 victory.
Thanks as always to the parents/caddies and a big thank you to Isabelle Watson for her course notes.
Next Sunday is a home game against Kooyonga.
Junior Division 2 Round 5
Royal Adelaide v Kooyonga
Sunday 4th June at Royal Adelaide Golf Club
1st tee at 9.15am
Round 3
Royal Adelaide 5 defeated Mid North 0
Sunday 21st May at The Grange Golf Club (East)
Report courtesy of Di Faull
The 3rd round of Junior Division 2 Pennant was held on Sunday 21st May at The Grange Golf Club. The RAGC team of Mitch Zander, Jisung Park, Liam Hutchison, Alston Ma and Freddie White with Gabe Hedrick as reserve played against the Mid North team. Despite some rain earlier the weather held and RAGC won 5 – 0.
Freddie was first off, he lost the first hole then parred the 2nd for a win and also won the 3rd to be 1 up. Over the next 6 holes he only lost 1 and was 2 up after 9 holes. Back to 1 up after the 11th he went on to win the 12th and square the 13th. It was a loss followed by a win on the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th. The win on the 17th giving him the match 2/1.
Alston was our number 4 player and there wasn’t much between Alston and his opponent but he started well and was 2 up after 3 holes then 3 up after 9. Although he didn’t hit his ball as far as his opponent his excellent short game always kept him in he game as it tightened up on the back 9 and he was able to stay in the lead. He was dormie 3 playing the 16th but a loss here saw the match go to the 17th which he won, ending the match 3/1.
Liam played number 3 and had a great front 9 with 2 pars and a birdie and he needed every shot. He was 2 up after 9 then finished the match in great style winning the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th for a 6/5 victory.
Jisung played number 2 and after a couple of great rounds at RAGC found himself playing off 16. He came out strongly and won the first 4 holes and never really looked in trouble, it was just a matter of which hole he would finish the match on, and this despite some wild drives. The match could have finished on the par3 12th but a wayward drive resulted in the match going to the next hole which he won to finished with a 6/5 win.
Mitch played number 1 and despite losing the first hole put himself in front and stayed at 1 up after 9 holes. The back 9 saw a change and he was 1 down after 13 but came home strongly to square 14 then win the 15th, 16th and 17th to finish the match 3/1.
Overall a great win to the team so thanks to all the players and as always a big thank you to the parents/caddies.

Round 2
Royal Adelaide 3.5 defeated Glenelg 1.5
Sunday 7th May at The Vines
Report courtesy of Peter Maddern
It’s May and at The Vines this afternoon the scent of nearby fruit both fermenting and rotting wafted across the course according to shifts in the breeze. More arresting on arrival was a sense this was a day for mini golf – not of the Holey Moley variety (and wasn’t that program a credit to the Australian television industry) but rather where players are often seemingly shorter and less heavy than the bags of clubs they are going to play with.
Team USA, in the form of Gabe Hedrick (with his father Warner III on the bag) shot out of the gates like Vo Rogue in his prime and led by 4 after 4. Every time their Stars and Stripes cover was ripped off the putter as it was removed from its holster, the poor kid from Glenelg must felt like some sort of lone Russian spy up against Sly, Arnie and The Duke all at once and not just a ten year old. Under a tight hold, of a manner Vic Rail – famed jockey of Vo Rogue – himself would have acknowledged, Warner proceeded to lead his pony home to a comfortable 5/4 victory.
Although also getting off to a bright start, a more stout competition awaited Lucas Huang but he was never headed, winning with a hole to spare and Alston Ma, after the turn, simply dismembered his older and much lower handicapped opponent to record the biggest win of them all – 6/5. Thus, the ‘Miniatures’ had won the day for RA well before the teenagers even came into view.
Of those, Jisung Park off 21 did not want for ambition off the tee but tended to spray the ball all over an area well defined by his surname while Mitch Zander, torn away from his gaming console this morning to help out after a late withdrawal, brought forth more of those notable qualities he displayed in the Sharp Cup last year by coming from 3 down at one point to hit the lead well into the second nine before settling for a halved match.
So, as secateurs were packed away for the evening by the itinerants in the nearby vineyards, those workers often defined nowadays as ‘highly skilled’ according to our enlightened immigration policies, so too the RA team retired to enjoy a well-earned 3.5 – 1.5 win.

Round 1
Royal Adelaide 3.5 defeated Tea Tree Gully 1.5
Sunday 30th April at Sandy Creek Golf Club
Report courtesy of Di Faull
The 2023 season for Junior Division 2 pennant got off to a great start on Sunday 30th April at Sandy Creek Golf Club in reasonable weather. Junior Division 2 pennant is handicapped match play over 18 holes and with 8 clubs represented matches start earlier than for Junior Sharp Cup.
Representing RAGC in this first round against Tea Tree Gully Golf Club, were Angus Norcock, Liam Hutchison, Jisung Park, Alston Ma and Lucas Huang with Jisung and Lucas teeing up for the first time in this format.
Playing in reverse order of handicap Lucas Huang was first off against a competent girl from TTG and giving her 5 shots. The boys played off the blue tees and girls off red tees so there were some holes where Lucas’s opponent had a significant distance advantage which made it more challenging for him. Despite this they were square after 9 holes but his opponent played very well on the back 9 and the match finished on the 15th with a 5/3 loss.
Alston Ma was second off, his opponent was on the same handicap and it was game on from the first hole with Alston 5 up after 9 holes. The back 9 proved more challenging for both players, a 3 on the par3 11th was a highlight as Alston kept his cool and took out the match on the 16th 3/2.
Jisung Park was next and also played someone on the same handicap. This was a tightly fought match, Jisung was 4 down after 5 holes but brought the match back to square winning 6,7,8 and 9. They squared 10 and 11 then he won 12 but lost 13. A win on 14 was looking good but he lost 15 then won 16 only to lose 17! At this point the match could have gone either way but they squared 18 and the match.
Liam Hutchison was our penultimate player getting 6 shots from his opponent. They had a great match with neither player gaining much advantage on the front 9. A magnificent chip in by Liam on the 8th for a birdie and we thought the hole was his until his opponent dropped his into the hole for a birdie as well! They squared 10,11 and 12 then Liam won the next 2 holes and kept his lead going to the 17th 2 up with 2 to play. They squared the 17th so Liam won 2/1.
Angus Norcock playing at no.1 for the team gave his opponent 2 shots . He started very strongly and was never down in his match although they were square after 9 holes. He then won 10, lost 11 but won 12,13,14 and 15 to win the match 4/3.
Final result RAGC won 3.5 to Tea Tree Gully 1.5.
Thanks to all the players, caddies and parents and good luck next week.
