Royal Adelaide 4 defeated The Grange 3

A cool and foggy morning at Glenelg greeted us for the final against The Grange who had finished 2nd at the end of the minor rounds. We were looking to continue our good form from the semi final against Glenelg and reverse the 4 – 3 loss to The Grange in Round 2. There was one change to our semi final team with James Norcock unavailable, so Cam Cordon came into the starting line up.
We started well enough and after 4 holes we were up in 4 matches, square in one and down in the other two but after 8 holes The Grange had mounted a comeback and we were now only up in 2 matches, square in 3 and still down in the other 2.
From there Will Arnold playing at No 1, kept on his merry way playing great golf and easily accounted for his opponent winning 5/4.
Cam Cordon at 6, was locked in a see-saw match and was square after 11 but then his opponent got on a roll and Cam went down 2/1, leaving the match tied at 1 win each.
Anthony Olsen, at 5, was down early but then got it back to square after 9 but then his opponent won the next couple of holes to pull away to win 3/2, edging The Grange ahead 2 – 1.
Alex Pacifico, at 3, had an axe to grind after a comment by his opponent on the 2nd tee and from there Pacif playing great golf, was simply too good for his opponent, never letting him into the match and won 4/3 – overall match score back to 2 – 2.
Jonathan Cherry, playing at 4, by his own measure wasn’t having a good day and found himself 3 down after 10. Unfortunately despite his best endeavours he couldn’t peg his opponent back and lost his first match of the season 3/2. We were now teetering at 2 – 3 in the overall match but….
Brad Manton, playing at 2, was having a good day and was 2 up early in his match. A slight hiccup between holes 4 and 8 saw that margin disappear but from there Brad regained control and surged ahead with good golf to record a 4/3 win and level the ledger again at 3 – 3 overall.
So it all came down to Michael Richardson playing in the number 7 match (the first match to start the final). Richo had been in great form and was tasked with going out and getting an early win on the board for us. This prospect was looking good as Richo was in front over the closing holes and came to the 18th 1up. Unfortunately a good (and initially a seemingly unlikely) up and won by his opponent from the greenside bunker leveled the match and forced it back down the 1st for sudden death.
A pumped up Richo unfortunately hit his tee shot through the first fairway and into the water and with his opponent safely on the fairway (albeit some distance behind Richo) we looked done. A great shot though by Richo to 8 foot put the pressure squarely on his opponent and this proved too great and a missed short putt from The Grange’s No 7 meant the match headed to the 20th hole. An errant drive by Richo again with his opponent sitting pretty in the middle of the fairway handed the advantage once again to The Grange but a sensational recovery shot by Richo from deep in the trees again put the pressure on his opponent and when neither player holed their putts, the hole was halved and headed to the 21st hole (the 210m par 3, 3rd hole).
The Grange’s no 7 missed the green short right and Richo smoked a 4 iron onto the green, pin high and about 20 foot to the right. Advantage Richo and even more so when his opponent was confronted with a horror lie. His ensuing shot couldn’t get past the bunker and when he splashed out to about 12 foot things were looking good for Richo. Richo still had a difficult breaking putt to negotiate but when he put it to 6 inches the match was over and the putt conceded meaning we won the epic final 4 – 3.
A great reward for all the hard work throughout the season and meant Royal Adelaide had won the Bonnar Cup for only the 2nd time in 70 years. Thanks to Randall Faull for all his support and guidance as Assistant Manager throughout the year, and Terry Thornton for taking the reigns in Round 4. Thanks to the coaching staff and Club for assistance through the year and all the caddies who volunteered their time to assist the players. Finally thanks to all the supporters who came out to watch throughout the year especially the large contingent for the final – it was greatly appreciated by the players.

Semi Final
Royal Adelaide 5.5 defeated Glenelg 1.5

The Bonnar team ventured to North Adelaide to take on top of the table Glenelg in the semi final. We had beaten them 3 weeks ago at their home course so we entered the match with a measure of confidence but still knew that we had to be at the top of our game to win.
Michael Richardson led us out at No 7, playing against a Glenelg opponent who had only lost one match all year (to Jono Cherry 3 weeks ago). Richo and his opponent were locked in a tight tussle all day with the match being square after 9 and still that way after 11. A fine tee shot on the par 3 12th gave Richo a 1 up lead after 12 and from here he pressed ahead winning two of the next 3 holes to be dormie 3 up on 16 tee. A solid par there closed out the match and gave him a 3/2 win.
All the other matches were played in 4s and interestingly in each group the matches followed suit.
Anthony Olsen and Jonathon Cherry playing at 6 and 5 respectively were locked in tight battles with each of their opponents. Both were 1 down after 5 but then both recovered and at the turn Olso was square and Jono 1 up. Winning 11 Olso joined Jono at 1 up and things were looking promising but true to the closeness of the match both their opponents then birdied the par 3 12th to bring both matches back to square. The toing and froing continued in both matches and after 15 Jono was 1up and Olso was 1 down.
James Norcock at 4 and Alex Pacifico at 3 started solidly enough and both their matches were fairly even in the early stages and both were 1 up after 5. From there however both started to pull away from their respective opponents and at the turn Norcks was 4 up and Pacif 3 up. After 12 they had both extended their leads and Norcks was 5 up and Pacif 4 up. Norcks then closed his match out on the 14th winning that to win 6/4 and give us our second point. Going up 15 Pacif was dormie 4 up.
Meanwhile behind them Brad Manton at 2 and Will Arnold at 1 got off to fast starts with Brad 3 up after 3 and Will 2 up. Both continued to play good golf and at the turn they had both increased their leads with Brad 4 up and Will 3 up. Will then won 10 and 11 and Brad 11 so standing on 12 tee both were 5 up. From there they both closed out their matches both winning 5/4 which sealed a very comprehensive victory for us.
With the 4 wins in the remaining 3 matches (Pacif dormie 4 up, Jono 1 up and Olso one down) were declared halves thus giving us a resounding 5.5 – 1.5 victory. This really was a great team victory over Glenelg who were both the defining champions and top of the table team this season.
So off to the big dance we go, where we will play The Grange. The final is being played at Glenelg over 16 holes so we will need to be on our game from the very first hole. Many thanks to the caddies and supporters who came out to North Adelaide, it was most appreciated by all the players. We hope to see the same and more on Sunday for the final. Good luck also to Sanderson Cup, Pike Cup, Women’s A3 and Junior Division 2 in your upcoming grand finals. Hopefully there will be a number of Pennants flying at the dinner on Sunday night!

The final round of the season was another early start for the Bonnar team. The equation though was very simple – win at home and we play finals.
Cam Cordon led us out at 7 and took the lead in his match early being 1 up after 4 and extended this to 3 up after 7. He held his lead through the turn and was still 3 up after 11. His opponent won 12 but Cam then held his 2 hole lead and stood on 17 dormie 2 up. Unfortunately for Cam a couple of missed putts on 17 and 18 saw his opponent win the last two holes and square the match.
Kelly Zhu playing at 6 came flying out of the blocks and was 4 up after 4. He lost the 7th to go back to 3 up but after the turn he won 12 to regain his 4 hole lead which he never relinquished and ended up with a fine 5/4 win.
Michael Richardson at 5 also got off to a hot start and was 3 up after 4. From there his match evened out with both players playing solid golf. Richo’s 3 hole lead was reduced to 2 when his opponent won the 12th and this lead was reduced to only one when the opponent birdied 15. Things looked to be turning for the worse when Richo found the furthest left hand bunker on 16 and his opponent put his tee shot to about 5 foot. However a great bunker shot by Richo to 4 foot and a lipped out putt from his opponent meant Richo halved the hole when he holed his 4 foot putt and stopped the momentum shift. Errant drives by both on 17 kept it interesting but Richo managed to hold on and win 17 to win the hard fought match 2/1.
Anthony Olsen at 4 was taking no prisoners in his match and his 4 hole lead at 4 was soon increased to 6 up after 7. Whilst his opponent somewhat halted Olso’s charge he couldn’t make any headway and Olso was still 6 up after 11. A win on 12 capped off a great day’s golf for Olso to seal a 7/6 win.
Brad Manton at 2 had a solid start and was 1 up through 4 which he maintained through 7. From here Brad started to pull away playing good golf and he came to the 12th tee 4 up, a lead which he then held and recorded a good 4/3 victory.
Will Arnold at 1, won his first 3 holes before losing the 4th but then promptly won 5 and 6 to be 4 up standing on 7 tee. His opponent won a couple of holes from there but Will was still 2 up after 11 despite not playing the golf he wanted to play. This lead increased to 3 up and by the time Will reached the 16th tee he was dormie 3 up. When his opponent experienced bunker troubles on the left of 16, the hole was conceded and Will won 4/2.
James Norcock at 3 was locked in a tight battle with his opponent and he was square after 4. A couple of losses then had him 2 down but winning the 7th to reduce the deficit to 1 was the beginning of Norck’s resurgence and when he holed his bunker shot from the right trap on 13 for birdie he found himself 2 up. Another win saw Norcks stand on 16 dormie 3 up but a combination of some good play from his opponent and some missed putts form Norcks saw the match head down 18 with Norck’s lead only 1. After less than ideal tee shots by both players, it came down to the approach shots and a fine one from Norck’s followed by an equally good putt saw him win the last for a 2 up win which meant we had beaten The Vines 6.5 – 0.5.
The win over The Vines meant we finished 4th and will play Glenelg in the semi final at North Adelaide next Sunday, a team we beat (on their home track) just 2 rounds ago. We have hit solid form over the last 3 rounds with 3 wins (including consecutive 6.5 – 0.5 victories) but of course this means nought if we don’t maintain such form for the upcoming semi final against the top of the table Glenelg.

A cold and blustery morning greeted us for our Round 6 clash against North Adelaide at Kooyonga. This was a must win match for us to make the finals.
Anthony Olsen led us out at 7 and after 4 holes was 2 up. He maintained this lead and his good golf through the front 9, turning 3 up. His good form continued and by 14 he was still 3 up. A slight fightback from his opponent saw him reduce the lead to 2 but in the end Olso triumphed 2/1 to give us our first point.
Cam Cordon at 6, got off to a bit of a wayward start and was 2 down after 4. However from there Cam found his groove and won the next 4 holes in a row to be 2 up at the turn and then promptly won 10 to increase this to 3 up which he maintained through to 14. His opponent though won 14 and 15 to reduce Cam’s lead to one but Cam then won 16 to be dormie 2 up standing on 17 tee. A great chip shot on 17 from Cam saw his opponent concede the hole handing Cam a hard fought 3/1 victory.
James Norcock at 2 was having a great day and his very solid play saw him 4 up after 4 which was increased to 5 up after 6 having almost holed his bunker shot. Norcks’ great play continued and he was never really troubled in recording a resounding 7/6 victory.
Michael Richardson at 4 was locked in a tight battle with his opponent, with each trading winning holes over the front 9 to see the score square at the turn. From here Richo started to gain the ascendancy and after 14 was 2 up. From here he closed out his match to record a good 3/2 win. This fourth win gave us the much needed team win.
Jonathan Cherry found himself in uncharted waters early and was 2 down after 4, where he remained after 6. From here though Jono managed to chip away and at the turn was 1 down, and then won 10 to be all square. From here normal service resumed and Jono powered on to win 4 of the next 5 holes to record a 4/3 victory.
Will Arnold, playing his first B grade pennant match in memory, also got off to a good start at 1 and was 2 up after 4 which he then increased to 4 up at the turn. From here, Will couldn’t shake his opponent but still moved on to be dormie 3 up. Will then won the 16th to finish off his match and record a 4/2 victory. This left us with 6 wins from 6 matches and one match left on the course.
Kelly Zhu was locked in a tough battle all day in his No. 5 match. His 1 up lead at 4 was extended to 2 up after 6 but then his opponent won the next 3 holes to leave Kelly one down at the turn. From here it was a see-saw match with Kelly getting it back to square only for his opponent to win another hole to put Kelly one down again. Kelly however lost 15 and after halving 16 found himself dormie two down. A big drive and great chip on 17 saw Kelly win that hole to head down 18, 1 down. A good green side bunker shot from Kelly on 18 put the pressure on his opponent and following a poor bunker shot which sailed well over the green, the hole was conceded and Kelly squared his match leaving the overall match score at 6.5 – 0.5.
This was a good win which means we head into the final game of the season needing to beat The Vines at home to secure our finals spot. The 6.5 – 0.5 result was a great boost to our standings though as there was a log jam on the table with 3 teams (us included) all having won exactly the same number of matches.
Thanks once again to the supporters and caddies who came out. We hope to see the same and more at our final round next week at home. A win locks in a finals spot for us.

A cold morning greeted us for our 7.30am match against Glenelg at Glenelg on Sunday. Taking on the undefeated team at their home course was always going to be a tough assignment but with our assembled team we were quietly confident. Having the match reduced to 16 holes (as a result of ongoing course renovations at Glenelg) added a little bit of the unknown to the whole proceedings.
Michael Richardson led us out at 7 and was 1 up after 4. Richo maintained his solid play all day, holding his lead through the front 9 and was still one up after his 12th hole. Winning the next two holes in a row finished the match off, seeing Richo triumph with a 3/2 win.
Kelly Zhu at 6 didn’t get off to a great start and was 2 down after 4 which then ballooned out to be 4 down after 8. Some good play after that saw Kelly win 2 of the next 4 holes and things seemed to be turning but alas he couldn’t make any more inroads and with the shortened match of 16 holes, saw Kelly go down 3/2.
Anthony Olsen, playing his first match for the year, played in the number 5 match and could never quite get ahead in his match. He was 1 down after 4 and again after 9. A missed putt on 10 saw him slip to 2 down and despite his best efforts he just couldn’t get it back from there and eventually also lost 3/2.
Jonathan Cherry, at 4, was locked in an early battle with his opponent as they traded winning holes but managed to sneak ahead after the 8th hole. He maintained his 1 hole advantage thru 10 holes and after 12 had managed to get out to 2 up, a position which he did not relinquish for the rest of the match, winning 3/2.
Brad Manton, playing his first Bonnar Cup game for some time, got out of the blocks quickly at no. 2 winning the first hole. From here he continued his good play and was 3 up after 7. A birdie on 8 from his opponent only temporarily halted Brad’s run and after winning 3 of the next 4 holes Brad won his match 5/4 thus tilting the match score 3 – 2 back in our favour.
James Norcock, at 3, just couldn’t get anything going and was down early. His woes continued and he soon found himself 3 down after 8. A slight recovery saw him reduce the deficit only for his opponent to birdie the 13th hole to leave Norcks dormie 3 down. A solid par on the 14th hole, extended the match but when Norck’s birdie putt on 15 slid by the edge of the hole the match was conceded with Norck’s losing 2/1.
The overall match was now tied at 3 wins a piece leaving it all with Louis Fuller, who like Brad, was playing his first Bonnar Cup match in some time having come in as a late replacement for the injured Alex Pacifico on Friday.
Louis had been locked in a great battle at No.1 all day, and came from 2 down after 11 to get his match back to square after 14. With only 2 holes remaining, a good tee shot by Louis to the longish par 3, saw him hold the advantage over his opponent but a good chip from the Glenelg no 1 and missed putt by Louis saw the match head down the last all square.
Louis pushed his drive right and was somewhat fortunate that it struck the trees down by the 2nd lot of water and dropped into the sandy waste area. His opponent meanwhile had hit a good drive and was sitting well in the middle of the fairway. Louis’ then played a great second shot which nestled on the front portion of the green about 12 foot under the hole. His opponent’s 2nd shot drifted off to the right and came to rest in the right bunker, short siding him. A good bunker shot still left him some 10 foot or so to the pin. Then as they say in the classics, “Cometh the hour, cometh the man” and Louis calmy rolled in his putt to win his match 1up and seal the team victory over the previously undefeated Glenelg 4/3.
It was a great victory by the team and has put us fairly and squarely back in the race for finals with two rounds to go. With only 1 point and 6 individual matches separating the top 6 teams, it is vital we win both of our remaining matches so as to secure a semi final spot.
Many thanks to the various caddies as well as all the supporters who came out to watch on Sunday – there were a number of positive comments from both sides about how many people were watching the match.
Our next match is against North Adelaide at Kooyonga at 10.35am next Sunday. It would be great to see similar supporter numbers again.

The Bonnar team welcomed 2 new players for round 3 at Tea Tree Gully against Thaxted Park. Alex Pacifico joined us from the Simpson Cup team, and Cameron Cordon returned after a 2+ year break. Other players were Michael Richardson, Jonathan Cherry, Alexis Junin, Jed Ballard and Darcy O’Neil.
This was the third straight match at a hilly course, and we were playing a team used to such conditions in a must win match for us.
Despite this challenge, the team rose to the occasion and finished with a meritorious 4.5 to 2.5 victory.
Cameron led out playing at number 7. The match was square after 5 holes, but Cameron then won 7 straight holes to win 7/6. He played beautifully and was level with the card at the finish.
Darcy was next out at number 6. He was never more than 2 holes behind, but could never get his nose in front, losing 2/1.
Jed hit form today, and won his match 4/3, finishing only 1 over par after 15 holes.
Alexis struggled again on the greens, and fell steadily behind, losing 4/3.
Jonathan had a mixed day by his own description, but despite this had enough good holes (including birdies) to win 5/4.
Michael was up most of the battle, but unfortunately finished with 2 untidy holes to square the match.
Alex, playing at number 1 against a long hitting younger player, was square after 9 holes. He then put his foot down with 3 birdies, and finished strongly to win 4/2.
This result puts us into the middle of the table. Next week is a vital game against Kooyonga, at Grange. Come out and support the team!

There were 4 different members of the Bonnar Cup team this round compared to last week – Matt Lawson, Henry Perks, Michael Richardson and Jonathan Cherry. Retained from last week were Jed Ballard, Alexis Junin and Kelly Zhu. The match was at The Vines against Grange, who are always tough opponents. Despite this infusion of new talent the team was unable to triumph, and suffered a narrow 4/3 loss.
Kelly was first out, and took an early lead which he never relinquished. He lost 15 and 16 to keep it interesting, but then won 17 to seal a 2/1 victory. He hit the ball well, but struggled on the greens – a challenge for most players, reminiscent of the challenges at Thaxted Park last round.
Alexis fell behind early, and according to him was seriously outputted by his opponent. He battled hard in the second half of the match, but could never make serious headway and lost 4/3.
Jed and his opponent were equally erratic off the tee, but Jed was never quite able to get in front. The greens were also not kind to him, but he was still only 1 down after 16. However, a missed shot or two on the next meant that he lost 2/1.
Jonathan started par, birdie, birdie to be 2 up after 3, and steadily moved further ahead to eventually record a 5/4 win. He played very well off the tee, and coped better with the greens than most of his colleagues.
Michael was in front early in the match, but a flat patch in the middle meant that he fell behind on the back 9. He was unable to claw back the lead, and eventually lost 4/2.
Henry was steady early, led for the first time after the 4th. From then on he steadily extended his lead, to win comfortably 5/4. He was particularly pleased with his short game, and was less phased by the mysteries of The Vines greens and surrounds.
Matt started well to be 2 up early, and was still 1 up after 7. The next few holes were a bit shaky, and he was 3 down after 15. He then won 16 to be dormie 2 down. On the next hole his opponent had a remarkably piece of luck, hitting a tree with his second and still finishing only 10 feet from the hole. Matt was unable to hole a long putt to win the hole, and went down 2/1.
As in the first round, tee to green the team did well, but were challenged near to and on the greens. Hopefully the experience of 2 hills course in the first 2 rounds will be valuable for the next round when we have a must win match against Thaxted Park at Tea Tree Gully. It took quite some time to finalise the Bonnar Cup team for the first round because of unavailability and a late withdrawal due to a COVID infection in one of the players in the squad. The final team in order of playing was Jed Ballard, Sam Medlin, Alexis Junin, Kelly Zhu, Ian RIce (pulled out of pennant retirement at the last minute or so), Lewis Antell and Darcy O’Neill. Not a lot of pennant experience there, but the team bonded well and fully supported each other on the day.
The weather on the day was perfect, but Thaxted Park golf course proved to be a challenge for all players – particularly the greens, which were fast, full of treacherous slopes, and very difficult to read. Also fair to say that hills courses do not generally favour RAGC golfers, and we were playing Tea Tree Gully, members of a course renowned for tricky greens in a hilly site.
Despite these challenges the players did a great job, and the team came away with a tied match 3.5 to 3.5. Little needed to change for us to record a win, but a tie was a highly meritorious result.
Darcy led the team out, and after a shaky start settled down and kept his game together to win 4/2. Helped by hitting his second to a foot on the par 5 10th for a tap in eagle. Great effort in his debut in pennants, ably assisted by “super caddy” Sophie Hilditch. Lots of high level match play advice and green reading.
Lewis was also ably supported by super caddy number 2 (Sebastian Leaney) in his debut in pennants. His match was very close all the way through, with Lewis having his nose in front much of the time. He was 1 up after 16, but unfortunately a lost ball on 17 and an untidy 18th meant that he lost 1 down. His opponent benefited on the 18th when he knifed a pitch that would have almost finished in the clubhouse, except that it hit the flagstick at pace and finished about 15 feet away.
Ian, our playing manager, battled hard all day, but was let down at times by wayward putter and a couple of forgettable drives. He eventually lost 2/1.
Kelly, also ably assisted by super caddy number 3 (Thomas Zhu), played very steadily, employing the intimidatory tactic of blasting a 3 iron off the tee on the long par 5 holes while all others took drivers. He was 4 up after 12, and then held on well to win 3/2.
Alexis, hoping to emulate the success of his son Hugo in the McMillan Shield, played very steadily to record a comfortable 4/3 win. He kept the ball beautifully in play, but like everyone else found the greens a mystery.
Jed “took one for the team” to play at number 1. He stayed in the match until the last few holes, but could never quite get his nose in front. A couple of mistakes towards the end, and he lost 3/2.
Sam was brought out of pennant semi-retirement, and his excellent match play record meant that he was slotted in at number 2. After being 2 down mid round, he rallied to be 1 up going down 16. An untidy hole meant that the match was square going down 17, where he proceeded to sink the only long putt for the day for a birdie to be one up with only 18 to play. The putt on 17 probably left a dent in the back of the hole, but fortunately hit dead centre with the flag out. Last match of the day to finish, his opponent then made a classy up and down out of the bunker on the last to win the hole, halve the match with Sam, and halve the overall result for the day.
Overall a rewarding outcome given the situation, and a sound start to the season.
