2024 Men’s Club Dinner and Ackland Horman Trophy

A beautiful day greeted players on Saturday for the Ackland Horman Trophy. Director of Golf, Chris Crocker, drew fairly even pairings for proceedings with only two points separating 1st and 6th, and 10 points separating the entire field.

Congratulations to the winning pairing of Peter Maddern & Jim Katsaros, who won on a countback from Ivan Simmons & Greg Chappell, both on +9. Trevor Pozza & Smiley Newland posted +8 to finish third, with David Grant & Ned Hewitson, Chris Penny & Steve Mason and Michael Jay & Don Howie, rounding out the top six on +7.

Guests were very impressed with the menu curated by 2023 champions, Chris Penny & Peter Joy. Both Chris (+7 with Steve Mason) and Peter (+5 with George Highfield) posted very respectable scores again in 2024. With such a positive response to the 2024 menu, there was some lively debate and banter regarding the 2024 champions, and the menu they may concoct for the 2025 dinner.

After dinner, evergreen MC Wayne Phillips introduced himself, his achievements, and guest speaker, Peter Carey OAM. Peter spoke about his life and career, from his journey with the Bays, into corporate life at Coca Cola, and his rewarding years at Youth Opportunities.

Thank you to all players, and those that contributed to a great day.

The Men’s Club Dinner and Ackland Horman Trophy will follow the same format as 2023 and be held on a single Saturday.

All male members are welcome to attend the Men’s Club Dinner.

Peter captained Glenelg in the 1983 to 1988 seasons, including Glenelg’s 1985 and 1986 premierships and runner up finishes in 1987 and 1988. Prior to taking on the captaincy, Peter and Glenelg won a premiership and were runner up on five occasions.

His other football achievements include:

  • In 2009, inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame

To this day, Peter holds the record for the most SANFL games played, having suited up in 448 games.

In recent years, Peter has been Chief Executive of the charity, Youth Opportunities and remains actively involved as an ambassador.
