CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP WRAP
The Men’s Club Championship saw Harry Coote and Louis Fuller, two players very familiar with each others game, battle it out for the Championship. Harry went to lunch with a 2 up lead after the first 18 holes. In the afternoon, the match ebbed and flowed between 1 up and 2 up to Harry until the 29th hole where Harry extended to a 3 up lead. Louis quickly got it back to 2 down but that was as close as the match would get with Harry sealing the win and the Championship 3/2 on the 34th hole.
The Women’s Club Championship was also an exciting match with Raegan Denton leading 2 up after the first 18 holes. Raegan played beautiful golf to be square with the card through 12 holes in her second round and lead the match 5 up. It looked like the Championship was hers however, Bekky Stutley forced her way back into contention winning the next 4 holes and halving the 17th to send the match the full distance. Raegan held her nerve and hit the 18th green in regulation to clinch the match 2 up.
Harvey Lyall started the Men’s B Grade Championship in good form taking an early 3 up lead after 4 holes but his opponent James Bennett fought back and by the time the 14th rolled around, James held a 2 up lead with form on his side. Harvey kicked into action with wins on the 15th and 16th holes and the match was all square with two to go. James leaned on his experience winning the 17th and a par on the 18th hole was enough to seal the win and the Championship 2 up.
The Women’s B Grade Championship match shaped up as one that was going to go the distance with Ali Coventry and Carolyn Astley all square after 3. Unfortunately an injury to Carolyn saw her have to concede the match with Ali being crowned the Women’s B Grade Champion. With presentations a few hours away and no other plans, Ali caddied for Juliet Hugo in the Women’s A Grade Plate final.
The Men’s C Grade Championship was an exciting match going all the way to the 18th hole. The lead changed early with both Tom Facy and Jackson Paul sharing the wins on early holes. Tom Facy dialled up the pressure to play his way to a 4 up lead after 11 holes. It looked like match over but Jackson Paul came alive with wins on the 12th, 15th, 16th and 17th holes to have the match all square heading down the last. Tom regained his composure to win the 18th and the match 1 up.
In the Women’s C Grade Championship Sonia Ferrari jumped well to win the 1st hole. From there Sonia faced a Heather Jenkins avalanche as Heather won the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th holes. A further win on the 9th hole saw Heather 6 up at the turn. Heather went on to win the match 8/7 to take out the Women’s C Grade Championship in emphatic style.
In the Men’s A Grade Plate Michael Newcombe won the first three holes of the match to be 3 up with Tim Pozza Jnr storming back into the match with wins on the 8th and 9th holes to be 1 down at the turn. However Michael wrestled back the momentum with wins on the 10th and 11th holes. This gave Michael enough of a buffer to win the match 3/2.
The Women’s A Grade Plate saw Juliet Hugo jump to an early lead. Not known for losing matches once she has established a lead, Juliet used her experience to win and halve holes at crucial moments. Rachel Sweeney began to peg the match back but eventually ran out of holes with Juliet winning the match 2/1.
In the Men’s B Grade Plate Final Will Ferrari found himself 1 down after the 4th hole but a match winning running run of 6 holes from there was enough to put a stranglehold on the match with the score line reading 5 up after 10. Peter White got the match back to 3 down but it was a bridge too far as Will held on for a 3/2 win.
Leonie Hall claimed the Women’s B Grade Plate with a 4/3 win over Ash Younger. Ash took the 1st hole but Leonie immediately won back the 2nd hole, took the lead on the 3rd hole and won the 5th hole to be 2 up. Ash got it back to one on the 6th but that was as close as the match got with Leonie winning holes 9 – 12 and to go on and win the match 4/3.
The Men’s C Grade Plate match was a tight affair with the lead seesawing between Paul Clark and Don Howie on the front nine. Paul grabbed the advantage at the turn with a 1 up lead which he extended to a 2 up lead on the 10th. Don got one back on the 11th but Paul won the next 3 holes to be dormie up, eventually winning 4/2.
The Women’s Higher Handicap Plate was a marathon with two of the nicest people in golf, Jane Coward and Mary Lou Simpson engaging in an enthralling battle. You aren’t given a championship or a plate, you have to take it which is what Jane did winning the match with a birdie no less on the 21st hole.

TUESDAY 31ST OCTOBER
Club Championship Qualifying
The Club Championship festival continued on Tuesday with the Women’s B and C Grade Championship and Higher Handicap Plate contestants taking to the links in non gale force conditions, a real improvement on last week. Ali Coventry continued being wise and patient and claimed the B Grade Best Qualifier award. Ali backed up her first round 97 with a second round score of 99 and had the distinction of being the only B Grade player to score in the 90’s both days which may have earned her the nickname of Michael Slater. Cricket lovers will know what I mean. Her total of 196 was good enough by three shots from nearest rival Janice Fletcher on 199. Ali was also good enough to win the Best Net qualifying with scores of 73, 76 = 149 by six shots from Paula Botten and Janice Fletcher.

No rest for the wicked as we’ll see the Women’s B and C Grade Championship return to the course on Thursday for an early, or as we say in the pro shop – a sleep in, 7am start. Good luck to everyone continuing in the match play component of the Championship. A reminder that trophy presentations will take place on Sunday 5th November at the conclusion of the final match.
SUNDAY 29TH OCTOBER
Club Championship Qualifying
Good golfing conditions were the order of the day as the second round of qualifying for the Men’s Club (A Grade), B Grade and C Grade Championships and Women’s Club (A Grade) Championship took place with the Boys’ and Girls’ Junior Championships also being played in conjunction with these events.
Raegan Denton, last year’s Women’s Club Championship runner up, signalled her intent to go one better this year winning the Centenary Cup for best gross qualifier in A Grade with rounds of 76, 74 = 150 by one shot from Bekky Stutley who shot 75, 76 = 151. Raegan also captured the Junior Girls’ Championship with Bekky in the runner up position.
In the Men’s Club Championship, good mates Louis Fuller and Harry Coote shared the Tiger Cup for best qualifier in A Grade with Louis shooting 75, 74 = 149 and Harry shooting 74, 75 = 149. Last year’s champion, Josh Grundel is lurking ominously one shot further back on 150 which was also enough to capture the Junior Boys’ Club Championship with Lewis Antell the runner up on 167. Josh was also successful in the Seaton Cup for best net qualifying in A Grade, pipping Louis Fuller by one shot with nett scores of 72, 74 = 146.
The Women’s A Grade best net qualifier was taken by young up and coming junior Elyse Kozlovic with net scores of 76, 67 = 143 who also took out the Junior Girls’ Best Net.

It was a good day for doubles backers as Sam emulated Josh De Michele from B Grade by taking out the C Grade best net qualifier as well with scores of 67, 78 = 145.

TUESDAY 24TH OCTOBER
The first round of the Women’s B Grade and C Grade Championships and the Higher Handicap Plate were played in challenging conditions with the wind relentless in its ferocity.
It was a day for wise minds and patience. Ali Coventry proved the wisest and most patient and sits atop the leaderboard of B Grade with a first round score of 97, one shot ahead of an almost as wise Janice Fletcher.
In C Grade Sonia Ferrari jumped out to a three shot lead with a Lord Nelson 111 in the first round, she’ll have strong competition for number one qualifier from Sue Barry who sits in second place with 114.
In the Higher Handicap Plate Jane Coward leads the way with 28 Stableford points in the opening round.
Well done everyone on getting through what would have been a tough day. Good luck for the second round of the Championship where hopefully we’ll see some kinder weather.
