Final

Royal Adelaide 2 lost to Mount Osmond 3

Monday 8th July at West Lakes Golf Club

Report courtesy of Janice Fletcher

In damp conditions the slightly nervous RAGC A3 team got off to a shaky start in their final against Mount Osmond at West Lakes.

Playing 3, Anne Arnfield with caddie Claire Sweeney, was the lone player up early, but strong play by her opponent saw her lead whittled away and lost by the 6th hole.

At the turn RAGC were behind in all matches, but steady play by the very experienced and patient Pauline Morrison playing 4, was rewarded with a birdie to go square on the 13th hole.  She finally took the lead and the tussle continued until the 17th when Pauline put her approach shot inches from the hole to clinch the win 2/1.

After falling behind early, steady play by Jo Reeve, playing 5, with caddie Deb Wallman saw her take the lead on the 11th hole to finish with a 2 up win.

Our top golfer, Juliet Hugo, ran into an opponent in blistering form, and was 4 down after 5 holes.  On the 9th (I think) hole, a rare skinny shot from her opponent ricocheted off the Manager’s cart to end up not far behind the green.  It was that sort of day.  Juliet rallied but ended up losing 4/3 despite the support of her caddie Di Faull.

Mirrie Waters, playing 2, got off to a slow start, but, with veteran caddie Jane Searle on the bag, rallied to square her match on the 14th hole.  The match remained square coming down 18 with both RAGC and Mt Osmond in the clubhouse with 2 wins each.  Mirrie put her second shot closest to the green; her steady opponent put her third shot below the hole.  Mirrie saw her chip end up in the greenside bunker and her shot out was wide, right and too far from the hole.

It was a great match played in good spirits against a well oiled machine.  Thanks so much to the caddies and supporters who braved the weather to cheer us on and to Matt and the team for their inspired training.  Didy’s protein balls and my Anzac biscuits were not enough to save the day this time.  We look forward to next year.

Semi Final

Royal Adelaide 4 defeated The Vines 1

Monday 1st July at Glenelg Golf Club

Report courtesy of Janice Fletcher

Despite a cold start to the day, fourth place qualifiers RAGC got off to a hot start on their home course in their semi-final against top finishing team The Vines.

Jo Reeve with Anne Arnfield on the bag, was first off and was never in trouble, quickly establishing a commanding lead over her opponent to end with a terrific score of 8/6. Jo did not lose a hole all match.

Pauline Morrison, with protein ball specialist Didy McLaurin on her bag, got off to an equally hot start and was also 4 up after 6 holes.  She was 6 up after 12 holes, winning 5/4 despite a spirited attempt from her opponent to turn things around.

Anne Ellis, and her caddy Claire Sweeney eased gently into their match, to be +2 at the turn, but wins on the next 2 holes were enough to win her match 5/3 and result in a team victory.

Mirrie Waters and Juliet Hugo’s matches were therefore considered halved. Juliet was leading her match, with the able support of her caddy (and assistant manager) Di Faull. Mirrie and caddy Jane Searle had a tough match against a player in very good form.

The team retired to the clubhouse where, after a long wait, we saw the final match come down 18. To this point both teams had come in with 2 wins, but Penny Matthews from Mt Osmond clinched victory 2 up.

Thanks to the trusty supporters and caddies, rules officials Jim Sweeney and Tony Newman as well as Paul Stuchbery and team for the organisation on the day.

We are looking good for our final against Mount Osmond on Monday 8th July at West Lakes.

Round 7

Royal Adelaide 4 defeated Highercombe 1

Monday 24th June at Glenelg Golf Club

Report courtesy of Di Faull

The 7th round of A3 pennant was played on a modified 16 hole course at Glenelg Golf Club. Needing a strong finish against Highercombe the RAGC team of Juliet Hugo, Mirrie Waters, Pauline Morrison, Anne Arnfield and Jo Reeve came home with a 4 – 1 win.

Jo was first off, square after 3 holes she went on to win the next 5 holes, a slight wobble on the next 2 holes gave her opponent a glimmer of hope but this was soon dashed and the match finished with Jo 5/4 up.

Similarly Pauline started strongly and was never down in her match, 3 up after 9 holes she won the next hole to be 4 up with 6 to play. A halved hole saw the match go to the par 3 and a win to Pauline 5/4.

Juliet’s match was tight to start with and they were square after 5 holes at this point Juliet applied the pressure and won the next 4 holes, coming up to the 11th she was 5 up and a beautiful shot to the back of the par 3 with her opponent still to get on the green resulted in a 5/4 win.

This left 2 players still out on the course.

Anne had started well but the match was very even, she was 1 down after the 9 holes. She won the next but this was followed by a loss so she was still 1 down with 5 holes remaining. A par on the par 3, a birdie on the par 5 and a bogey on the par 4 saw Anne 2 up with 2 to play. She lost the next hole so went up the 18th 1 up then finished the match all square.

Mirrie was also still out battling her opponent with all other matches finished. On the front 9 holes she went from 1 up to 1 down in a tight contest and was 2 down after 9 holes. Undaunted she fought back to be 1 up after 14 holes with only 2 left to play. She squared the penultimate hole and was also 1 up going up the final hole – the 18th where a wayward 2nd shot saw her in difficulty and the match also finished all square.

A great win and firmly cemented the team in 4th position and a place in the finals. The team plays the number 1 team The Vines next Monday at Royal Adelaide.

As always thanks to the caddies who give up their time so willingly each Monday and to the spectators who come to watch.

Round 6

Royal Adelaide 4.5 defeated West Lakes 0.5

Monday 17th June at North Adelaide Golf Club (South Course)

Report courtesy of Di Faull

It was a very cold Monday morning when the RAGC A3 Team of Mirrie Waters, Juliet Hugo, Pauline Morrison, Anne Arnfield and Jo Reeve defeated West Lakes 4.5 to 0.5!

Jo was first off and was 3 up after 6 holes, she was never really in doubt and steady play saw the match finish on the 15th with a 5/3 win.

Anne started slowly and was 4 down after 4 holes, undaunted she stayed in the match but was 3 down after 9 holes. The back 9 saw her back in form and the match was square after the 13th. She then won the 3 holes to win the match 3/2.

Pauline started on fire winning the first 3 hole but lost the next 3 to be square, she came back immediately and won 6 of the next 8 holes for the match to finish on the 15th with a 5/3 win.

Juliet was in a good position after 9 holes at 2 up, the match heated up on the back nine and she was 1 up going down 17. A wayward 2nd shot saw the match square going up 18 and that is how it ended.

Mirrie had a tight match but was never down, her match went to the 17th where she won 2/1.

An excellent win by the team has seen the A3’s leapfrog to 4th position on the ladder after a very shaky start to the season, a good win next Monday could see us in the finals.

As always a big thank you to the caddies and also to those who came to cheer the team on.

Royal Adelaide 4 defeated North Adelaide 1

Monday 3rd June at West Lakes Golf Club

Report courtesy of Janice Fletcher

The A3 team put in a strong performance today in the cold weather to defeat North Adelaide at West Lakes.

Returning to the plains, the team, with 3 new members, carded a 4 – 1 victory with performance honours going to Pauline Morrison for a 5/3 victory.  Mirrie Waters held on against a fight back from her determined opponent to prevail 1 up.  Experienced pennant players Anne Ellis (3/1) and Jill McEwin (3/2) showed their stuff to great effect.  Sharon Honour rounded out the team with a 2/1 loss.

Great effort by all players and thanks to the caddies and spectators.

Report courtesy of Janice Fletcher

The A3 team and their caddies travelled south to The Vines to take on second ranked Glenelg, where we lost another close match on a hills course.

Anne Ellis playing at 1 demoralised her opponent with an eagle on the 12th hole to win her match 5/3.  Jo Reeve was off to a flying start and held on to close her match out 4/2.  Anne Arnfield playing 4 got off to a strong start but her opponent steadied and rallied to win the match 4/2.  Mirrie Waters and Pauline Morrison had tough matches to lose 3/2 and 4/3 respectively.

Next week we are back on the plains, much closer to home, where we take on North Adelaide at West Lakes.
