Round 6

Royal Adelaide 2 lost to The Vines 5

Sunday 23rd June at Royal Adelaide Golf Club

Report courtesy of Paul Reader

We started on the 1st hole at 9.15am.

For the first 11 holes things were even. We were ahead in three matches, square in one, and behind in three. However, the tables turned against us on the 12th and we slipped into a position where we had four matches in the red. Although there were hopeful moments, we weren’t able to gain control.

Matt Lawson (with caddie Robert Lawson) #7 enjoyed a fantastic front nine, playing sub par golf and got to +4. Unfortunately, his opponent responded with even better results on the back nine and got things back to square standing on the 18th tee. Matt’s drive was perfect, then his approach shot strayed for the first time in 18 holes. Unfortunately his chip shot was a bit shy, as was the putt, leaving him with a 1 down result.

Nathan Kent (with caddie Owen Davies) #6 was up early until his opponent turned the screws on the fourth, and continued until he lost 6/4.

Henry Perks (with caddie Bill Jeffries) #5 was two down after nine holes, four down after 12, and while he mounted a good fight, and won the next two holes, he ran out of holes and finished with a 2/1 loss.

Brad Manton (with caddie Kym Cobb) #4 played well all day, against a tough opponent, and their scores generally oscillated between +1 and -1. They went down the 18th square but unfortunately his putter went cold and he finished 1 down.

Louis Fuller (with caddie Terry Thornton) #3 returned after working in the Kimberley region, used his course knowledge and avoided being in the red all day, and finished with a 3/2 win.

Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #2 sporting a short sleeve RA top all day while the rest added extra layers to avoid freezing, played at his best to secure a solid 6/5 win.

Harry Coote (with caddie Peter Ormandy) #1 was travelling fine for the first four holes, but his opponent gained the upper hand on the fifth, and relentlessly built on his lead, resulting in a 6/5 loss.

The team appreciated the family and Club members who braved the cold to support them.

We are ranked 5 on the leader board and will need to secure a win this Sunday week to have a chance at making the finals.

Our next contest is against Glenelg at Glenelg at 7.30am Sunday 30th June. Spectators welcome.

Round 5

Royal Adelaide 3 lost to Kooyonga 4

Sunday 16th June at The Grange Golf Club (West Course)

Report courtesy of Paul Reader and Rod Phillips

Royal Adelaide played Kooyonga in Round 5 of the 2024 Simpson Cup season at Grange West last Sunday.

Our team was looking to secure a finals place against the defending champions who were sitting in uncomfortable 6th place on the ladder.

Starting on what was the LIV Fan Village 7 weeks ago, it was obvious that the match would be very tight with most holes being won with birdies rather than lost to pars.

Matt Lawson (with caddie Henry Lawson) #7 continued his great ball striking and fought hard to make the turn 1 up.  However Matt was unable to capitalise on a couple of opportunities on the green while his opponent holed several bombs on the back 9 to record a 2/1 win.

Henry Perks (with caddie Bill Jeffries) #6 started very well, birdying the 2nd en route to establishing a 3 up lead after 5 holes. His young opponent then got hot with his flat stick holing 3 consecutive putts of over 10 feet to square the match after 8 holes. In a titanic battle Henry fell behind for the first time after losing the 16th hole.  Playing 18 1 down, Henry did what many a LIV player would have loved to do by playing a superb pitch shot and holing a 12 foot birdie putt to halve his match.

Previously undefeated Nathan Kent (with caddie Brad Weston) # 5 played steadily but was no match for the birdie blitz put up by RAGC employee Heath Riches. Heath had at least 5 birdies before recording his 6/5 win.

Will Arnold (with caddie Steve Copley) #4 struggled with driver and was down early.  Despite fighting hard, Will could not recover and went down 6/5.

Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #3 played well early but lost his 3rd and 4th holes and was still 2 down after 8.  The veteran then produced some “Billy magic” by reeling 4 birdies in the next 5 holes!!!  This burst shattered his opponent and Billy ran out a comfortable 3/2 winner.

Harry Coote (with caddie Peter Ormandy) #2 played a high quality match against a fellow SA Amateur player.  Harry had 2 birdies on his way to a 2 up lead after 6 holes but his opponent used his enormous power and deft touch to wrest back the lead after 12 holes.  In a tense struggle, Harry drew level after 16, but the opponent’s birdie on 17 saw Harry chasing as he played the last.  On the back of a great drive, Harry drew strength from the Rippers as he snatched a half on the 18th.

In recognition of his outstanding season thus far, Josh Grundel (with caddie Terry Thornton) was elevated to play in the #1 position.  Displaying his newly found distance and silky short game skills, Josh matched his opponent throughout the front 9 and turned for home square.  After a kick in birdie on 15, Josh played the 18th all square and was able to secure a win after a fine approach shot.

Despite the narrow 4 – 3 loss there were enough signs to indicate that we are not far away from beating Kooyonga should we meet again later in the season.

We are currently locked in a 4 way tie for 2nd place on the table with our next match against The Vines at home at 9.15am Sunday 23rd June. This match will be pivotal in our quest for the finals and any support from RAGC members would be greatly appreciated by the team.

Round 4

Royal Adelaide 6 defeated Mount Osmond 1

Sunday 2nd June at The Vines Golf Club of Reynella

Report courtesy of Rod Phillips and Paul Reader

RAGC was scheduled to play Mount Osmond as we travelled to The Vines GC for our 4th round Simpson Cup clash.

We started on the par 3 10th hole and made a slow start with only one player winning the first hole and 4 losses recorded.  However we improved the position to be in front in 3 matches after 9 and down in the other 3 with one square.  On the back 9 our superior ball striking and short game skills came to the fore as the momentum swung our way and RA recorded a comfortable 6 – 1 win.

Although Matt Lawson’s (#7) opponent almost holed his first shot, Matt’s consistent ball striking shone through as he poured on the birdies en route to a 3/2 win.

Henry Perks (with caddie Bill Jeffries) #6 established a 3 up lead after 6 holes.  From that position, the margin varied between 2 and 3 holes as Henry continued to find the centre of the tree lined fairways. Henry’s lead continued before he secured the 2/1 win.

Nathan Kent #5 continued his great form.  Although being behind after 5 holes and not having his A game, Nathan was able to grind out a 2/1 win.

Will Arnold (with caddie Steve Copley) #4 was also a bit rusty and spent a some time in the trees.  However with great support from his caddie and family, Will’s ability and determination was enough to record a solid 2/1 win.

Josh Grundel (with caddie Matt Grundel) #3 put in another dominant display.  After losing his early 2 up lead to be square after 5, Josh “put the hammer down” winning the next 5 holes in succession.  From there he was able to cruise to a comfortable 4/3 win.

Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #2 was down early and still 2 down after 10.  Billy remained patient and used his extensive course knowledge to dominate the second nine and finish his match as a winner on the 17th.

Harry Coote (with caddie Peter Ormandy) #1 on his return from Darwin was out of sorts and unable to consistently find fairways or greens.  Harry fell 5 behind after 10 holes and although fighting to get back in the game on the second 9, with the urging of our #1 caddie, ran out of holes as he succumbed 3/2.

After 4 rounds, we are 3 and 1 and sit in 3rd place on the leader board, with a big 3 minor rounds to be played. Our next contest is against Kooyonga at The Grange (West) at 12:10 PM on Sunday 16th June. All RA members are encouraged to support our boys.

Round 2

Royal Adelaide 4.5 defeated Thaxted Park 2.5

Sunday 19th May at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club

Report courtesy of Rod Phillips and Paul Reader

Royal Adelaide’s Simpson Cup team headed to Tea Tree Gully for its match against Thaxted Park very keen to get on the board after a disappointing loss in Round 1.

Josh Grundel was a welcome addition to the team after representing SA in the Australian Interstate series.

Starting on the back 9, we were off to a slow start with 6 players being in deficit at some stage in their first 5 holes.  However through the middle of the round the momentum started to swing our way and we eventually recorded a solid 4.5 – 2.5 win.

Alex Pacifico (with caddie Quinn Spencer) #7 played solidly but could not contain his opponent eventually suffering a 3/2 loss.

Brad Manton #6 played a very tight match.  After falling 1 hole behind early, Brad got to 1 up after 5 holes. However he was unable to get any further ahead holding a slender lead until the 16th hole.  Brad’s opponent then birdied the 17th hole and made a great up and down on 18 to scrap for a half.

Nathan Kent #5 started slowly, losing his ball up a tree on the 2nd to go 2 down. From then on Nathan dominated his opponent winning 9 of the next 10 holes before recording a comfortable 5/4 win

Louis Fuller (with caddie Rob Manton) #4 was in a tight contest on his first 9, oscillating between 1 up and 1 down.  Louis found a few more fairways and maintained his superior scrambling skills early on the back 9 and ran away to secure a big 5/3 win.

Josh Grundel (with caddie Terry Thornton) #3 played very solidly after birdying his first hole. He drove the ball consistently en route to a business like 5/3 win.

Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Bill Jeffries) #2 battled hard against an opponent with a very hot putter and some extreme good fortune.  Billy made a few good up and downs but could not match his opponent who holed 4 putts of over 20 feet.  Billy went down 4/2.

Harry Coote (with caddie Pete Ormandy) #1 fell behind early with his opponent making a few early birdies.  Harry fought really hard and eventually drew level on the 13th tee.  Spurred by the #1 caddie and in fading light, Harry played par golf over the last 4 holes to run out a 2/1 winner.

Our next match is against The Grange at Thaxted Park at 12.10pm on Sunday 26th May.  We encourage all club members to come along to watch some great golf and support our team.
