The Junior Division 2 Pennant semi final was played on Sunday 7th July at The Grange on the West Course against The Vines. We were keen to play The Vines because despite finishing the minor round in first place they had been the only team to defeat us in the minor round and had won the McMillan Shield earlier in the year when hot weather denied us the opportunity to play them for the title.
The match did not disappoint being tightly contested to the finish.
Our team was Angus Norcock, Sam Garrick, George Longbottom, Alston Ma and Freddie White.
Freddie got off to a great start being 2 up after 3. He was hitting the ball well, playing out of bunkers beautifully and putting well. He was 4 up after 9 and never looked back he won 4/3.
Alston started strongly being 2 up after 3. He was playing terrific golf but his opponent was hitting longer. A bit of bad luck and Alston lost his momentum for a couple of holes, he went into the 18th one down which he halved to finish one down.
George had a mixed day, he was disappointed in his golf early, being 2 down after 3 but found some rhythm and hit some long straight drives to be 2 up after 12. He was still 2 up after 15 and ours and his match was sealed on his putt on 17 for a 2/1 win.
Sam got off to a great start with a fabulous straight drive, he continued playing some terrific shots throughout, particularly his long game. He was square after 3 but struggled around the greens. He finished 5/4 down.
Angus played terrific, steady golf all day. Despite giving away 6 shots he was 2 up after 9 and 4 up after 11. He was playing a tidy short game and straight off the tee. He finished 4/2 up.
Finishing 3 – 2 was a terrific win taking us to the final next week at Glenelg against The Grange.

Willunga always presents a challenge in the middle of winter with temperatures well below double figures but after 40mm of rain the day before many of the bunkers were water filled and surrounds soggy. Notwithstanding this the club invariably provides the warmest of welcomes and plenty of hot food and beverages to keep the cold at bay.
Our first off was Freddie White who was rushed off the Colonel Light Gardens football field by father Mark and keeping within speed limits managed to get Freddie on the our starting tee, the 10th, with but a minute to spare. He was 4 down after 6 holes but managed to whittle this down by 3 with 5 to play. He then showed some great fighting spirit to win the last 2 holes for a wonderful win on the 18th, particularly as he was giving his opponent 11 shots. Well done Freddie.
Alston Ma continued his very consistent form, with his short game being particularly impressive and was too strong for a 6/4 win.
George Longbottom was next off and was never headed being 3 up after 6 and finishing the match after the 13th for a 7/5 win.
The result of the match was still in the balance despite the two early finishes of Alston and George with Fred Hancock and Angus having close tussles and Freddie White’s result undecided.
Fred Hancock despite his opponent getting 6 shots, had his nose in front all day but only ever by one. He rode his luck on the par 3 14th when he put his tee shot in a penalty zone but managed a 5 whilst his partner 4 putted and they halved the hole. He won the match on the 17th for a 2/1 win.
As was the case 2 weeks ago Angus Norcock was giving his opposition plenty of shots, 10 this time but it is the consequence of playing in this division with a handicap of 7.8. He kept plugging away with the match eventually ending on the 16th for a 4/2 loss. I suspect he’ll be playing on a higher division next year if the reduction in handicap occurs with the same rapidity as it has over the last 6 months.
Well done to the team, all of whom enjoyed the win in the warmth of the clubhouse with the others from the successful Sharp Cup team. Thanks also to the parent caddies who are such an important part of our group.

Round 6 of the Junior Division 2 Pennant was played last Sunday at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club, it was a very cold afternoon, our opponents Country Districts.
The team was Sam Garrick, George Longbottom, Alston Ma, Freddie White and Oscar Wang.
It was a very exciting match that went to the 18th hole with the final player sinking a metre putt for par to win the hole, halve his match and halve the overall match.
Oscar playing number 5 played very steady golf throughout. He was 1 down early but by hole 11 he was one up. Not a long hitter in comparison to his opponent he was proud of his fourth hit with a hybrid into the long par 5 11th green and sinking his putt for par. He won 3/2.
Freddie played a very steady solid game, he played a fabulous chip on the first hole into the green sinking his putt for a win. He had to give his opponent 15 strokes which was tough. He eventually lost 6/5.
Alston also played a very steady solid game he was never down and 4 up after 12 holes. His shot of the day was a bunker shot on 9. But his opponent found his rhythm and tested Alston, by hole 16 he was only 1 up, he held his nerve and won 17 finishing 2/1.
George hit some terrific shots but was disappointed in some of his game. He played a terrific third shot from 60 metres into the 10th green and sunk the putt for par. He finished down 5/3.
Sam playing number one had a tight match with his opponent, only ever one up, down or square all day. His shot of the day was a wedge shot on the second hole, par 3 that went in for a 2. He was one down after 17 so had to win 18 to square his match and the overall game. In fading light both he and his opponent hit the 18th green in 2 shots but Sam held his nerve and 2 putted while his opponent took 3 putts.
A fitting result of a squared game.

A crisp cloudless morning greeted our Junior Division 2 pennant side for a match against Kooyonga at Kooyonga – always a tough task.
There had been several changes leading up to Sunday, mainly due to competing football commitments but we filled the team with a crop of very promising young members who carried the RA flag with great distinction.
Eight year old Oscar Wang led us off playing number 5, was never far off the pace but never ahead, being 2 down at the turn. His putting was a highlight, sinking several 10 footers for half. He hit some memorable shots to the green on 13 and 17 to be one up on the last, only to lose that hole to a monster putt from his opponent with the match ending all square.
Lucas Huang played exceptionally well for an 8/7 win despite giving his opponent four shots. George Longbottom playing at number 2, likewise was too strong in his match giving five shots to his opposition for a comfortable 6/5 win.
Alston Ma, playing at number 3 also gave five shots to his rival, was two down at 13 and one down at the last hole. He chipped to within 12 feet and rolled in his putt which could not be emulated by his opponent. so another squared match.
Angus Norcock conceded 14 shots to his adversary and was 2 down after 5 but with only 2 bogeys and the rest pars over the next 12 holes, playing with wonderful consistency, finished a 3/1 winner for a four matches to one result in RA’s favour.
Although an apparently easy win, the match was in the balance over the last few holes and required some heroics and great competitive golf to prevail.

The fourth round of Junior Division 2 Pennant was played at RAGC Sunday 2nd June in chilly but otherwise perfect golfing conditions on our beautiful home course. Our opponents were The Vines.
Our team was Mason Holden, Angus Norcock, Fred Hancock, Sam Garrick and Alston Ma.
Mason won the first hole but dropped the next three, with terrific touch around the green and iron play got back to square after 9. His shot of the day was a chip from wasteland on 9 to within a metre to birdie and win the hole. He struggled on the back 9 and finished 4/2 down.
Angus lost the first but strung 4 wins together to be 1 up after 9. He played very solid golf with straight drives, clean irons and immaculate bunker play. He lost both 10 and 11 but fought back with wins on 12,14 and 16. Going into 18 he was 1 up and played his shot of the day into the 18th green with a pitch from the rough 60m out to about a metre from the hole. A 2 up win.
Fred hit a great drive on 1 and squared the hole but dropped both 2 and 3, he fought back to be square after 9. He was up and down on the back 9 with wayward drives. It was a tight match to the end. His shot of the day was a recovery 3rd shot, fairway wood, on 15, and a win on the hole. He took the match to the 18th but finished 2 down.
Sam was not playing his best with some wayward drives and irons. But to credit his opponent was playing excellent golf and Sam was respectful of how well she was playing. Sam’s shot of the day was a 9 iron 118m out from the 4th hole to put his ball just over a metre from the pin. He was 3 down after 9 and never really recovered. He won 11 and 14 and hit a beautiful bunker shot on 16 but lost 3/1.
Alston played a very smart and steady game against an opponent who could hit much longer. Alston squared the first and lost the second after that he was never down, he was 2 up after 9. His shot of the day was a terrific chip on 15. He went into 17 2 up, he squared that hole to win 2/1.
We finished 3 – 2 down but a hard fought match. Thanks again to parent caddies.

Sunday was a perfect day for golf but with 1 player short it was destined to be a tough competition for the team of Fred Hancock, George Longbottom, Alston Ma and making his debut
Oscar Wang. They were playing Mid North District who had a formidable team, at Glenelg Golf Club. Undaunted the boys pulled off a heroic victory 3 – 2!
Alston was steady and squared the first 4 holes then he started to apply the pressure with an amazing short game and incredible putts to be 2 up after 9 holes. The next 4 holes were played brilliantly and he won 6/4.
The other matches all went to the 18th in nail biting finishes.
Oscar had to to regroup after finding himself 3 down at the turn, he did this admirably and got back into the game at 1 up after the 15th. Unfortunately he lost 16 with a mis-hit into the penalty area but he went on to square 17 so was 1 down with 1 to play. Despite his good golf he lost the 18th and the match 1 down.
Now we had won 1 match and lost 2 and the result would be decided by George and Fred.
George was up for most of the match by 1 or 2 holes and in a real battle with his opponent. He got to the 17th green 1 up with a good chance of winning the hole but a wayward chip cost him the hole so he went down 18 all square. It was not easy as George duffed his tee shot but made up for it with his approaching shots to win the hole and the match.
Now matches were square 2 all, and the final pairing was deciding the outcome. Fred had started brilliantly driving the first but his opponent would not give in and 4 pars in a row for both of them kept the match at square, Fred lost the next 3 then won the next 2 so was 1 down after 9 holes. He got back to square after the 12th but lost 13 and 14. Unfazed he won 15 and 16 so back to square. They halved 17 and the final result depended on the last pair on the last hole. Fred hit a great drive as did his opponent then Fred played short whilst his opponent went for the green and landed in the bunker, unable to get out with his first shot and only just getting out with his second he had a long approach to the flag whilst Fred was on the green in prime position with a makeable putt. Result a fantastic win to Fred and a team win 3/2!
Congratulations to the boys they played exemplary golf and conducted themselves well. Thanks also to the caddies we really appreciate your assistance.

The second round of Junior Pennant division 2 was held at a very cold Sandy Creek Golf Club on Sunday 19th May with Royal Adelaide playing The Grange. Representing Royal Adelaide in this round were Lucas Huang, Liam Hutchison, Alston Ma, George Longbottom and Mason Holden. When I say cold I really mean cold according to the BOM the temperature at 3.30pm was 10 degrees but felt like 5! Sandy Creek is a nice course with some very challenging holes for our youngest players especially if competing against a female player as there are a number where females get a 40-80 metre advantage which can be daunting when first observed. The last match went down to the wire with Alston giving us the extra win for 3/2 victory.
Lucas was first off, giving away 11 shots He held his own and was 1 down going down the 9th when he played out of turn and had to replay his chip onto the green and went on to win that hole to be all square. He was a little disconcerted by the ruling but composed himself and squared 10 but lost 11 and 12. He won 13, lost 14 and went down 3/2.
Liam started slowly losing the first 2 holes, he managed to get back into the game and remained at 2 down after 9 holes. Unfortunately he then lost his way on the back nine and went down 5/3. George was never in trouble and was 6 up at the turn racing to an 8/6 win.
Mason had a tough match but got to 2 up after 9 holes, his opponent was not going to give in and it took Mason till the 17th to secure the victory 3/1.
This had us at 2 matches each with the final result to be decided by the last player on the course, Alston Ma. He had managed to stay ahead of his opponent by 1 for the front 9 and again his opponent was not going down quietly. He fought back until it was all square going up the 18th. An overshot chip by his opponent and a beautifully placed chip by Alston quietened the Grange supporters. His opponent missed his long putt, Alston did not! A great win on 18 to give our team the 3 – 2 victory.

The first round of Junior Division 2 Pennant was held at The Vines Golf Club on Sunday 5th May. Junior Division 2 Pennant is handicap match play and in the first round the Royal Adelaide team played Tea Tree Gully. Representing RAGC on the day were Fred Hancock, Sam Garrick, George Longbottom, Alston Ma and Liam Hutchison, and they were up against an amazingly evenly balanced Tea Tree Gully with 4 of the team only having to give 1 shot on the 8th and the final match none. The course is undergoing extensive irrigation works so there were a lot of no play and free relief areas as well as navigating to the temporary hole which did cause some confusion at times but the weather was perfect and RAGC came home winners 4 – 1.
The first player off was Liam who came out of the blocks and won the first 2 holes, both Liam and his opponent played to their handicaps over the next 7 holes although Liam dropped a shot on the 7th to be 1 down after 9. Liam then just added the pressure winning 11 then 13 and finally 15 for a 4/3 win.
Alston played his usual steady game with pars on the first 2 par 3s, he stayed in front and was 4 up with 5 to play but lost the next 2 holes then squared 16 but won 17 for a 3/1 victory.
George played a great game and won the first 6 holes he lost 7 and 8, won 9, 10 and 11 and the match finished on the 12th with a 7/6 win.
Sam had a tough match with to start with but managed to get ahead against a very determined opponent. He hit same great recovery shots from parallel fairways that LIV golfers would be proud of, very impressive indeed. His opponent never gave up and the match went to the 18th with Sam 1 up, good steady play gave him the win 2 up.
Fred was the last of the team with the lowest handicap and had a shaky start but came back and the match was all square after 9 holes, a few wayward shots had Fred 3 down but he came back again to be 1 down on the 18th, again a wayward tee shot cost him dearly and he lost 2 down.
Congratulations to all the team not just on winning but also for their behaviour and as usual many thanks to the parents/ caddies for giving up their time.
