Sunday 2nd July at Royal Adelaide Golf Club
Report to follow
Round 7
Royal Adelaide 2 lost to Kooyonga 5
Sunday 25th June at Glenelg Golf Club
Report courtesy of Rod Phillips and Paul Reader
We started on the 1st hole at 8.25am.
Nathan Baulderstone (with caddie Darcy O’Neill) #7 got us off to a great start winning his first 3 holes. With a bit of luck and a couple of bombs his opponent got it back to square after 17. His opponent’s luck continued as he made a flukey par up the 18th which squared the hole and the match with Nathan.
Anthony Olsen (with caddie Harry Olsen) #6 couldn’t get his putter going against a hot opponent and lost 6/4.
Louis Fuller (with caddie Luke Johnston) #5 had a very tight match which oscillated between 1 up and 1 down. His opponent’s brilliant birdie on 17 sealed a 2/1 loss for Louis.
Brad Manton (with caddie Kym Cobb) #4 was down early and although fighting hard could not claw back the lead eventually going down 2/1.
Will Arnold (with caddie Steve Copley) #3 was elevated in the order on the back of some great form. His outstanding ball striking and putting continued as he trounced his opponent 5/4 and completed his perfect minor round with 7 individual wins.
Harry Coote (with caddie Peter Ormandy) #2 was behind early and struggling to stay with his opponent. He was 3 down on the 14th tee but showing great heart and skill fought back to win the next 3 holes. Ultimately he claimed a half with a spectacular birdie on the 18th.
Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #1 had a titanic contest, never getting in front but never more than 1 down. Billy’s birdie chance on the last just missed and as a result, Billy suffered his first individual loss of the season, 1 down.
The team plays Glenelg in a knockout semi final at home at 9.25am on Sunday. We would love to get a big following of Royal Adelaide members to support our team in its quest for a 2nd consecutive grand final.
Best of luck to all other Royal Adelaide finals teams.
Simpson Cup Semi Final
Glenelg (2) v Royal Adelaide (3)
Sunday 2nd July at Royal Adelaide Golf Club
1st tee at 9.25am
Round 6
Royal Adelaide 3 lost to Glenelg 4
Sunday 18th June at The Grange Golf Club (East)
Report courtesy of Rod Phillips and Paul Reader
Round 6 of this year’s Simpson Cup competition saw Royal Adelaide up against Glenelg at the LIV affected Grange East golf course. Starting from the 10th tee and off the back “black” tees in cold and windy conditions, it was to be a brutal test of golf for all players ….and spectators.
For the second consecutive game, our #7 Nathan Baulderstone (with caddie Phil Baulderstone) looked dashing in another new pair of white shoes (see photo). After 5 holes and a couple of errors on the greens which resulted in a 3 down score line, Nathan was considering going back to his “old faithful” shoes. Instead Nathan decided to give himself a stern talking to on the 6th tee. Fortunately he is a good listener and after playing the next 12 holes in 3 under par, “Bauldy” had demoralised his opponent and left the course with a 5/3 win.
In typical fashion, Anthony Olsen (with caddie Harry Olsen) #6 was involved in a tight battle. After losing his first hole, Anthony chipped away to get to 2 up after 12 holes. Unfortunately, a couple of key putts went astray and when his opponent holed a 12 footer on the 18th, Anthony had lost 1 down.
Will Arnold (with caddie Steve Copley) #5 continued his outstanding undefeated season. After winning his first 3 holes, Will was dominant exhibiting outstanding trajectory control as he cruised to a strong 7/5 win.
Brad Manton (with caddie Josh Grundel) #4 was under pressure after losing the first hole. Brad fought hard to get back to square on several occasions on the front 9 but missing a couple of vital putts on the second 9 saw him record a 3/2 loss.
Louis Fuller (with caddie Bill Jeffries) #3 got off to a great start and was 3 up after 8. However a couple of wayward shots on the back 9 proved costly as his lead was whittled down. Unfortunately Louis couldn’t match his opponent’s birdie on the 18th and lost 1 down. (Louis 7 birdies in Tuesday’s comp suggest his game is still in good shape)
Harry Coote (with caddie Luke Johnston) #2 also had a tough battle. After squaring 6 holes on the front 9, Harry was 1 down at the turn. However things turned pear shaped early on the back 9 and Harry lost on the 14th hole.
Undefeated Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #1 was playing against an undefeated opponent. In a high quality match, Billy’s opponent gave him very few opportunities for wins. Although playing well, Billy found himself 3 down on the 15th tee. Showing his undoubted class and fighting quality, Billy won the last 4 holes (including an eagle (holed from off the green) and a kick in birdie on the last) for a spectacular 1 up win before an appreciative Royal Adelaide gallery.
Although disappointed with the close loss, the good news was that other results ensured that Royal Adelaide will be playing a semi final at home on Sunday 2nd July.
Our last minor round contest is against defending champions Kooyonga at Glenelg at 8.25am on Sunday 25th June. This is a key match for our team as we look to enter the post season in winning form. All Royal Adelaide members are encouraged to attend in support of our boys.
Simpson Cup Round 7
Royal Adelaide v Kooyonga
Sunday 25th June at Glenelg Golf Club
1st tee at 8.25am
Round 5
Royal Adelaide 2 lost to The Grange 5
Sunday 4th June at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club
Report courtesy of Rod Phillips and Paul Reader
The undefeated Royal Adelaide Simpson Cup team was matched against the winless team from The Grange in Round 5 at Tea Tree Gully last Sunday.
After 9 holes of putting on the most challenging greens we are likely to see all season, there were clear signs of trouble. We were down in four matches, although by only one or two holes it was a sign of what was to come.
Our #7, Nathan Baulderstone (with caddie Chris Rea) looking resplendent in his new footwear (pictured) got us off to a good start with an arrow like first tee shot. Nathan’s elegant ball striking continued throughout the front 9. After 13 holes, he had only missed 2 greens whereas his opponent had only hit 2 greens. Unfortunately his opponent’s great short game saw the match even at that stage. When Nathan missed a couple of shots late in the round, it was enough for his opponent to grind out a hard fought 2 up win.
Anthony Olsen (with caddie Harry Olsen) #6 hit the ball in typical fairway finding fashion, however after a couple of misread putts Anthony lost a bit of confidence with his flat stick. Anthony kept fighting hard to be 1 up after 16 holes. Despite hitting the last 2 greens in regulation, his opponent’s birdie/birdie finish resulted in a 1 down loss for Anthony.
Will Arnold (with caddie Steve Copley) #5 continued his superb form. With excellent control in the blustery conditions, Will registered a comfortable 4/3 win.
Brad Manton #4 was involved in a very tight match. Although never behind, Brad could not get more than 2 up. Playing the 18th hole 1 up, Brad’s opponent made a great sand save on that hole to halve the match.
Louis Fuller (with caddie Bill Jeffries) #3 struggled with his tee shots and spent a lot of time in the trees. Even Louis’ short game was not enough as we went down 3/1.
Harry Coote (with caddie Luke Johnston) #2 made a slow start with 3 bogeys to be down. Although fighting hard, Harry could never retrieve the situation and lost 3/2.
Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #1 was locked in a tough battle with neither payer able to get more than 1 up. After trailing at various stages of the front 9, Billy eventually gained the lead after 16 holes. After both players hit the green on 17, Billy’s unfortunate 3-putt proved crucial as both players parred the last to record a halved match.
We are now ranked equal first on the ladder with 3 other teams and are virtually assured of a home semi final on 2nd July.
We have a week off for the long weekend. Our next contest is against Glenelg at The Grange (East) at 12.10pm Sunday 18th June. RAGC member and supporters are encouraged to attend and support our boys.
Simpson Cup Round 6
Royal Adelaide v Glenelg
Sunday 18th June at The Grange Golf Club (East)
10th tee at 12.10pm
Round 4
Royal Adelaide 5 defeated Tea Tree Gully 2
Sunday 29th May at Kooyonga Golf Club
Report courtesy of Rod Phillips and Paul Reader
Royal Adelaide played its Round 4 match against another undefeated team, Tea Tree Gully at Flagstaff Hill GC last Sunday.
Starting on the 10th tee, there were many early birdies and wins for the Royal Adelaide boys as every player held a lead at some stage of the front 9. At the turn we lead in 4 matches and were square in the others.
Nathan Baulderstone (with caddie Phil Baulderstone) #7 continued his excellent form. With 3 birdies on the first 9, Nathan established an early lead which he held to the end before winning 2/1.
Anthony Olsen (with caddie Harry Olsen) #6 returned to the team this week and hit “fairways and greens” in typical style. His consistency was too much for his opponent and he finished a 3/2 winner on the 16th.
Will Arnold (with caddie Steve Copley) #5 struggled on the tricky greens and in a tight tussle was 1 down after 14. However for the second consecutive week Will’s tenacity and superior ball striking saw him turn that position into a 1 up win at the end.
Brad Manton (with caddie Ryan Hanlon) #4 playing at his former home course was locked in a real dog fight with an ex-professional opponent. With 7 halves on the front 9, it was looking like a close one. However Brad lost the first 3 holes on the back 9 and things looked grim. Brad using his course knowledge fought hard to get back to square with 3 to play. However he was unable to get “up and down” on the 18th and lost 1 down.
Louis Fuller (with caddie Bill Jeffries) #3 got off to a spectacular start. After a birdie on the first, Lucky Louis hit an iron to 10 feet on the par 4 second. This was only good enough for 2 halves as his opponent also birdied the first 2. Louis realised he had to step it up so he made a miraculous “up and down” from behind the trees on 3, then holed a bunker shot on 7 and then birdied the par 5 9th to record a 4 under front 9 which gave him a 3 up lead at the turn. His opponent then produced a couple of birdies in a high class match which saw Louis only 1 up after 13 holes. Louis won 14 and 15 which saw him 3 up on the 16th tee. A solid 2 putt par was enough to seal the 3/2 win.
Harry Coote (with caddie Sophie Hilditch) #2 was involved in another tight match. Although never behind, Harry could not get more than 1 in front with both players showing amazing putting skills. Harry’s results on the greens were enhanced by the green reading skills of his caddie!! Harry was still 1 up after 13 when unfortunately, his drive on the par 5 14th resulted in a smashed driver face!!!! This unsettled Harry as he tried to replace the club. He lost his last 4 holes and finished going down 3/1.
Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #1 was excellent as our leader. Although his opponent was competitive early, with Billy only 1 up after 5 holes, Billy’s skills shone through as he wore his opponent down en route to a 5/4 win in which he didn’t lose a hole (for the 2nd consecutive week).
The resultant win maintained our undefeated record and placed us at the top of the table.
Our next contest is against The Grange at Tea Tree Gully at 12.10pm Sunday 4th June. We are looking forward to the continued support from Royal Adelaide members as we approach the “pointy end” of the season.

Round 3
Royal Adelaide 6 defeated Flagstaff Hill 1
Sunday 21st May at Kooyonga Golf Club
Report courtesy of Rod Phillips and Paul Reader
Royal Adelaide played its Round 3 match against Flagstaff Hill at Kooyonga.
Nathan Baulderstone #7 got off to a good start and despite a wayward first tee shot, won his first hole. He was never headed or challenged en route to a comfortable 4/3 win.
Josh Grundel (with caddie Sylvia Grundel) #6 lost his first 2 holes and was never able to recover. Although square after 8 holes he eventually lost on the 18th.
Will Arnold (with caddie Steve Copley) #5 got off to a flier winning the first 3 holes against the opposition’s Club Champion. After cruising to a 4 up lead after 10 holes, Will’s opponent fought back to square the match on the 16th tee. Will then displayed exquisite short game skills to win the 16th and 17th and record a 2/1 win.
Brad Manton (with caddie Sophie Hilditch) #4 won his first 6 holes!! After a brief discussion with the Manager where a 10/8 win was contemplated, Brad proceeded to bury his ball in the face of a bunker on 7. The resultant loss of the hole was quickly overcome, with Brad being too good and running out a comfortable 7/5 winner.
Louis Fuller (with caddie Brett Backwell) #3 played an experienced campaigner who he knew well. After Louis teased his opponent by allowing him an early lead, Louis’ exceptional driving matched with his typical short game mastery proved too good as he completed a 4/3 win.
Harry Coote (with caddie Luke Johnston) #2 returned to the team after a successful week representing SA in the Australian Interstate series. Harry struggled to adjust to the Kooyonga greens and was 1 down after 6 holes. However, after making a brilliant sand save on the 9th to take the lead for the first time, Harry powered away to a 4/3 victory.
Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #1 was far too good for his outclassed opponent. Billy played sub-par golf and only halved 3 of his 11 holes as he proceeded to thump his opponent 8/7.
After 3 rounds, we share the top of the table with 2 other undefeated teams. Our next match is against one of those teams, Tea Tree Gully at Flagstaff Hill at 12.10pm (10th tee) on Sunday 28th May.
The team has really appreciated the number of Royal Adelaide members and supporters who have attended games this year and we look forward to that continuing this week in a key match in this year’s campaign.

Round 2
Royal Adelaide 4.5 defeated The Vines 2.5
Sunday 7th May at Thaxted Park Golf Club
Report courtesy of Rod Phillips and Paul Reader
Royal Adelaide started its match against The Vines on the back 9 with many teams missing players competing in the SA team at the Australian Interstate Teams Matches at St Michael’s Golf Club in Sydney. Royal Adelaide had Harry Coote representing SA.
After 9 holes things fairly equal, we were ahead in three matches, square in one, and behind in three. Things remained close for much of the second half until we secured 3.5 matches which allowed Billy to move the dial and secure a win in this contest.
Nathan Baulderstone (with caddie Matt Lawson) #7 played an experienced player in a competitive match. After establishing a 2 up lead on the first 9, Nathan found himself 1 down with 2 to play. After holing a great 12 footer to make an “up and down” half on the 17th, Nathan was faced with a similar length putt on the 18th to win the hole and halve his match. Bauldy calmly knocked it in centre cup and secured his half.
Josh Grundel #6 also had a competitive match, but continued to lose the next hole after a win. He finished on the 17th with a disappointing 2/1 loss.
Anthony Olsen (with caddie Harry Olsen) #5 returned to the team in Coote’s place but was very rusty early falling 6 behind at the turn. In typically tenacious style, Anthony found his game on the second 9 recording 3 birdies in a 6 hole stretch but was unable to get back in front, eventually losing 3/2.
Will Arnold (with caddie Steve Copley) #4. Will’s match was very tight. Although he was never behind, Will could never get more than 1 up. Standing on the 17th tee, 1 up , Will’s ball striking skill shone through winning that hole and recording a 2/1 win.
Brad Manton #3 also had a tight match. Brad never trailed, but was only 1 up after 13 holes. Manton then stepped up the pace, recording 3 straight birdies to emerge a 4/2 victor.
Louis Fuller (with caddie Bill Jeffries) #2 became a new father during the week, his daughter, River was born on Monday and was told don’t come home unless you win! Louis made a steady start and was square after 5 holes. However a stretch of 4 wins to conclude the first 9, was enough for the new dad to run out a comfortable 4/3 winner.
Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #1 played well on the back 9, but his opponent was under par as he established 2 hole lead after 10 holes. Billy stepped up the pace to get back square after 15 and before an appreciative Royal Adelaide crowd, hit an exquisite approach into the 16th for a gimme birdie. When he displayed great touch from back left on 17th green, Billy won another hole and the match 2/1.
Royal Adelaide are now undefeated after 2 rounds along with Tea Tree Gully and arch rivals Kooyonga.
Our next contest is against Flagstaff Hill at Kooyonga at 12.00 noon Sunday 21st May. Spectators welcome.

Round 1
Royal Adelaide 5.5 defeated Thaxted Park 1.5
Sunday 30th April at The Vines of Reynella Golf Club
Report courtesy of Rod Phillips and Paul Reader
RAGC started the 2023 Simpson Cup season with a match against newly promoted Thaxted Park at the Vines Golf Club.
We welcomed new team members Josh Grundel and Brad Manton.
The team was slow to start with 5 players “managing” deficits on the front 9. However as we moved into the later stages of the contest, our dominance emerged and a solid 5.5 – 1.5 win was recorded.
Nathan Baulderstone (with caddie Laura Birchmore) #7 met his equal and had a close match, which was halved after Nathan holed a 4 metre clutch putt on the 18th to square the hole.
Josh Grundel #6 battled with his putter, but showing superior ball striking and great resilience he recovered from being two down after 10 holes to win his match 1 up.
Will Arnold (with caddie Steve Copley) #5 took control of his match early, winning the first hole, and progressing to 3 up after 9 holes. He had a convincing 5/4 win.
Brad Manton #4 also took an early lead, and established a 5 up position after eleven holes. His opponent took back a couple on the back nine, however Brad held his lead to finish with 3/2 win.
Louis Fuller (with caddie Bill Jeffries) #3 was unable to back up from his win against LIV player Ian Poulter. Although his putting was at its standard very high level, his driving was a bit off and he went down 3/2.
Harry Coote (with caddie Luke Johnston) #2 buoyed by his selection in the SA team for the Interstate Series next week could not match his opponent’s opening eagle. However after winning 5 of 6 holes in the middle of the round was 4 up after 10 and ran out a comfortable 5/4 winner.
Billy Cawthorne (with caddie Tyron Davies) #1 had a tight and high quality match. After both players opened with birdies, Billy was 1 up after 15 holes. Billy then produced a birdie-birdie finish to secure his 3/1 win.
Our next contest is against The Vines at Thaxted Park at 12.10pm Sunday 7th May. We had a good following of RA members and supporters at The Vines and look forward to an even greater group at Thaxted this week.
